“Mr. Arts For Peace” Award
Joseph Tomangi Junior
Joseph “JT” Tomangi Jr., is an unstoppable force. Gliding down the runway or training in the MMA ring, his stunning magnificence commands attention. The exquisite blend of Samoan, Italian, and African American heritage is showcased in the powerful stance, the chiseled jaw and the sculpted chest. The aura comes from a good heart. The bold physical beauty is balanced by humility and quiet strength of character. Loyal until the end, he doesn’t know how to quit. A challenging childhood gave him the mind-set that rejection just motivates. A black sheep and troubled youth, he turned challenges into success with a full paid scholarship to University of California Berkley. He obtained a Bachelor of Science in Legal Studies and minored in Sports Medicine. The beauty of a focused mind leads him to success. The glow of a humanitarian heart guides him to philanthropic pursuits as he gives back, helping at-risk kids. Some days he walks the runway, some days he is a motivational speaker, and some days he is a film producer. Limited by nothing, JT took the hard lessons of the streets, applied them to the business world, and found the passion for changing lives. Lessons learned as a competitive athlete give him the strength to change his environment while he helps others on the rocky path out of gangs and into the business market.
According to JT, “There is no shortcut. It takes time to build a better, stronger version of yourself. Trust the process.” He leads by example, reaching for lofty goals with passion. His greatest joy in life is building authentic and genuine relationships. His goals are to lead youth/young adults, helping others and watching them grow into their real destiny.
Joseph “JT” Tomangi Jr. was born in San Francisco to a family pressured by poverty and driven by street values. Moving from place to place, struggling with gang affiliation from the age of 11, he died a little every day as the streets sucked the life out of neighbors and friends. A gifted athlete, he overcame hurt and fear through successes in football, basketball and track. He volunteered at the YMCA, group homes and juvenile facilities, learning as he mentored. Discipline and drive illuminated his realities as he caught glimpses of the man he wanted to be. As he evolved, he chose to inspire others with the lessons he learned.
While JT never planned an acting career, he has been cast in multiple television shows and films. He played the role of Jesus in “Heaven’s Gates and Hell’s Flames” on stages across America. He was featured in “Street The Movie” as an MMA fighter, “Crave The Movie” as a Pro Baller, “Going Postal in LA” as a criminal attorney, “A Voice From The White House” as the good soldier, “Vapor” as the Co-lead assassin, then television casting agents loved him in “How To Get Away With Murder”, “Grey’s Anatomy”, “CSI” and many others. He models for charity events like the fundraiser for MS, for LA Fashion Week, LA Fashion Corner, New York Fashion Week, and F.A.C.E. He has been chosen to represent Nike. With a book almost completed and television and film projects slated, he produces music videos with his brother Blaq Shark and Wolf Pack Musiq and helps clients shred with BLOCK FITNESS. Joseph “JT” Tomangi Jr. is a director, producer, artist, actor, writer, cinematographer, MC and entrepreneur. To him, the world is an empty canvas waiting for the masterpiece. Joseph “JT” Tomangi Jr’s motto is “DON’T GET MAD GET BETTER”
